India’s Sachin Khilari clinches silver medal in men’s shot put F46 event at Paris Paralympics 2024

New Delhi: Shot putter Sachin Khilari won India’s first medal on Day 7 of the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Wednesday, September 04. Khilari, the reigning world champion, clinched the silver medal in the men’s shot put F46 category with his best throw of 16.32m. Khilari was the favourite for the elusive gold medal heading into the final but ended up finishing behind Canada’s Greg Stewart.

Stewart, the gold medallist from the Tokyo Paralympics 2020, successfully defended his men’s shot put title in the F46 category after enjoying an intense battle with the Indian. Stewart threw his season best of 16.38m in the final in Paris on Tuesday to beat Khilari comfortably, clinching his second successive gold medal at the Paralympics.

34-year-old Khilari started the final with a throw of 14.72 m before upping the ante in the second round. He recorded his best throw of 16.32m in his second attempt which was enough to secure him the silver medal in the end. Khilari was in the lead after the second round. However, his gold medal hopes were soon dashed by Stewart, who threw 16.34m in his third attempt to take the top spot with a slender lead.

Khilari did come close again with a 16.31m throw in his third attempt, however, a 16.38m throw from the Canadian in his fifth attempt sealed the gold medal for him. The Indian finished with a 16.03m throw in his fifth and final attempt to settle for silver.
