International Court of Justice orders Israel to stop Rafah offensive

New Delhi: The judges of the International Court of Justice have issued a directive for Israel to stop its military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. President Nawaf Salam conveyed the court’s ruling, stating that the provisional measures issued in March were insufficient in addressing the ongoing crisis in the besieged Palestinian enclave. Consequently, the conditions warranted a new urgent order. “Israel must immediately halt its military offensive” in Rafah, he says.

Salam also says that the conditions in Gaza have worsened since their previous directive for Israel to promptly address the humanitarian crisis there. They argue that the interim measures imposed by the court earlier this year have not adequately improved the situation in the region. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators outside the court waved flags and played a rap on a boom box, rallying for a free Palestine.

Israel launches assault on Rafah

Earlier this month, Israel launched an assault on Rafah, triggering a humanitarian crisis that displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and disrupted vital aid routes. Responding to these events, legal representatives from South Africa petitioned the International Court of Justice (ICJ) last week, urging the implementation of emergency measures.

They argued that Israel’s attacks on Rafah must cease immediately to ensure the survival of the Palestinian population. Although the ICJ lacks enforcement powers, its rulings carry considerable weight in international disputes. South Africa’s broader case against Israel alleges state-led genocide, a claim that the ICJ has yet to thoroughly examine.

ICC prosecutor seeks arrests warrant

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, based in The Hague, declared on Monday that an application for arrest warrants had been filed against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and leaders of Hamas. This move could intensify diplomatic pressure on the Israeli government.
