International Yoga Day 2024: What is the theme for this year and its significance?

New Delhi: This year will be the 10th edition of the International Day of Yoga. The International Day of Yoga is observed on June 21 with a different theme every year. This year’s theme is ‘Yoga for Self and Society’. In the Bhagavad Gita, it is mentioned that “Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.” Let us understand the meaning of this year’s International Day of Yoga theme.

What is Yoga?

Before we understand the significance of the theme, let us know the meaning of Yoga. Yoga is an ancient practice that involves physical poses, concentration, and deep breathing. It is a mind-body practice that can build strength and flexibility, help manage pain, and reduce stress.

The term’ yoga’ was first mentioned in the Rig Veda, an ancient Indian scripture. It derives from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj ‘, meaning ‘union’ or ‘to join’. This practice, with its roots dating back over 5,000 years, carries a rich heritage and profound wisdom that continues to resonate in our modern lives.

If you’re grappling with anxiety, stress, or depression, consider incorporating Yoga into your routine. This ancient practice can provide a sanctuary of mental peace. Regular Yoga cultivates self-awareness, inner peace, and mindfulness, paving the way for a more balanced and harmonious life. Yoga is an invitation to embrace your true self.

Yoga’s theme, ‘ Yoga for Self and Society, ‘promotes a culture of health and wellness. It benefits individuals by fostering self-awareness, inner peace, and mindfulness and brings people together, creating a sense of community and shared purpose. Group yoga sessions can foster special bonds and mutual support, while the principles of Yoga, such as compassion and respect for all beings, inspire ethical behaviour and social harmony in society.

When done together, Yoga helps you build a healthier, more peaceful and connected society.

International Day of Yoga: History

International Yoga Day, a significant event in the global health and wellness calendar, has its roots in a proposal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly. Recognising Yoga’s ancient heritage and its potential to promote global health and peace, he suggested the idea of a dedicated day for Yoga. This proposal was met with universal appeal and acceptance, leading to the United Nations proclaiming June 21 as International Yoga Day on December 11, 2014.

International Yoga Day, held annually on June 21, is a global celebration that serves as a powerful platform to raise awareness about yoga’s benefits. This year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Self and Society,’ underscores yoga’s global impact in fostering individual well-being and societal harmony, inviting everyone to be part of this transformative journey.   knowledge Knowledge News, Photos and Videos on General Knowledge
