IPL 2025 auction: BCCI’s special retention rule for uncapped players, franchises eye bigger purse

New Delhi: Cricket fans across the nation are eagerly waiting for the Indian Premier League mega auction to be held in the beginning of the next year. Ahead of the highly-anticipated auction, there have been rumours that the event will feature many changes in this year’s auction.

Among the changes, multiple media reports have suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a big change to its player retention policy. So as to add to the rising value of the young talented players in the cash-rich league, the Indian cricket board is mulling to implement a special provision to retain uncapped players.

What’s the special retention rule?

Uncapped players in the Indian Premier League have made themselves indispensable assets for the teams with their relentless performances. The franchises are not willing to let go of theses players who have added considerable value to their teams and in order to accommodate this, the Indian cricket board is thinking of allowing teams to retain multiple uncapped players ahead of the next mega auction.

“Every franchise could be allowed to retain two or three uncapped players under an additional slot. Franchises have invested heavily in developing these young talents and are keen to retain them,” a source close to the development was quoted as saying to TOI.

The last season of the IPL saw the emergence of many uncapped players like Mayank Yadav, Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma who played a pivotal role in the success of their respective teams. A meeting would take place soon to finalise the retention rules for the uncapped players.

Bigger purse for IPL franchises

Apart from a special retention rule for the uncapped players, a major rise in the team purse is also on the cards this auction. According to reports, an increase for up to INR 120 crore an expanded retention limit of six players, including Right To Match (RTM) options, are on the table of IPL Governing Council. An official of a franchise has confirmed that a hike of 20 to 25 percent would be appropriate.
