New Delhi: Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was named as a replacement for Jake-Fraser McGurk by the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Wednesday, but the move, as it seems, has gone beyond the cricket field. The internet hasn’t been an ideal place for the Delhi-based IPL team since they announced the welcoming of Rahman, who will again be plying his trade for the team, after two years.
Rahman played for DC in 2022 and 2023 IPL seasons and will now help the team in finishing their last phase duties, which includes three league stage fixtures followed by the playoffs should they qualify. McGurk, who had left for home after the IPL had got suspended on May 9, has opted not to return for its resumption, due to the ongoing India-Pakistan hostilities.
Meanwhile, the move is facing the ire of the fans who are speaking against the team for bringing in a Bangladeshi player and the lives of Hindus as a matter of concern. There has been a widespread outcry over the lynching of Hindus in Bangladesh and the increased crimes against them in recent years. Some social media users even wrote about the desecration of temples and the pain that Hindus have suffered in the neighbouring country over the years.
Therefore, the Capitals, who had managed to pull a few fans to their side for their initial rampant run in the IPL 2025, looked to have lost a few of them owing to Rahman’s signing. The fans are urging the internet to boycott the team for their remainder of matches for welcoming a Bangladeshi player with open arms and for allegedly hurting their sentiments, terming the move as shameful.
Here are a few reactions from the angry fans –
I urge all Delhi Capitals fans to boycott their team, which shows no regard for the value of Hindu lives. #BoycottDelhiCapitals

Shame on you for showing no regard for the value of Hindu lives! While Hindus are being lynched, temples desecrated, and families torn apart in Bangladesh—over 2,000 incidents of anti-Hindu violence since August 2024, as reported by the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist…— Tinda Bhai🇮🇳 (@tindaleaks) May 14, 2025

Rahman to participate?
Whether or not Rahman will feature for DC in their upcoming IPL matches still remains unclear as he left for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday, a few hours after the news of his DC signing came out. Rahman posted the update on his “X” handle with a picture of himself having boarded a flight bound to Dubai.
Bangladesh are to play UAE for two T20Is scheduled on May 17 and 19 and if Mustafizur happens to play both games, he would only reach India on May 20. In this scenario, he would miss Delhi’s game against Gujarat Titans (GT) scheduled for May 18 and considering the quick travel would only increase his workload as he would hardly get any time to be ready for DC’s May 21 clash against Mumbai Indians (MI).
Delhi Capitals has been receiving flak on the internet for signing Mustafizur Rahman as a replacement player for the remainder of IPL 2025. Here’s what the fuss is about! Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
