Wimbledon: Carlos Alcaraz to face Daniil Medvedev in semi-finals

New Delhi: Title holder Carlos Alcaraz overcame Tommy Paul to reach the semi-finals of Wimbledon on Tuesday where he will meet Daniil Medvedev.

The Spanish world number three is eyeing his fourth Grand Slam title and won 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 against his American opponent.

Medvedev defeated top-ranked Jannik Sinner in five intense sets to reach his second consecutive semi-final earlier on Tuesday.

The Russian won 6-7 (7/9), 6-4, 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-3 against the Italian, who was a bit booged down by a mid-match health issue.

With the win, Medvedev avenged his Australian Open final defeat to Sinner in January.

Sinner sought treatment from a trainer and had to leave the court temporarily during the third set as it became evident he was suffering from an issue though it wasn’t immediately clear what bothered him.

The 22-year-old also had his heart rate checked as he sat with discomfort on the sideline before walking towards the locker room and returned after 10 minutes to resume playing.

World No.5 Medvedev was in no mood to relent wither after gon g down in the first set in a tie-breaker. He pushed himself harder to take a 2-1 lead after the third set on Centre Court.

But after getting medical attention while leaning back on his chair and resting his head on his hand. He reganed his touch afterwards and unleashed his booming trademarkd to stretch the match into a fifth set but didn’t have it in him to pull through in the end.

Medvedev won in four hours to end a five-match losing streak against Sinner, reaching his ninth Grand Slam semi-final game and would face either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul of USA in the last four stage.

“I knew if I wanted to beat Jannik it needs to be a tough match. He’s not a guy you can beat easy anymore,” the 28-year-old Medvedev said.

“I felt at one moment he was not feeling that good but he started feeling better so I’m happy I managed to still stay at a high level.”

Paolini vs Vekic

Jasmine Paolini brush aside Emma Navarro in straight sets to enter her first Wimbledon semi-final, where she is set to meet Donna Vekic.

Seventh seed Italian Paolini who was the runner-up at the French Open won 6-2, 6-1 over 19th seed Navarro in only 57 minutes.

Vekic beat Lula Sun to enter the last four of women’s singles with a 5-7 6-4 6-1 win earlier on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old beat the 123rd-ranked qualifier and would face either seventh seed Jasmine Paolini or 19th seed Emma Navarro for a place in the final on Saturday.

“Those couple of years were tough,” said Vekic on the period after her knee surgery.

“Now, reaching my best result ever at a Grand Slam, I’m really proud of myself, of the work that I’ve done, of the work that my team has done.

“I’m thankful to them for believing in me when I didn’t.”
