IPL 2025: Fans slam BCCI for shifting Qualifier 2 from Kolkata as rain plays spoilsport in Ahmedabad

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was heavily criticised by fans on social media as rain played spoilsport, delaying the start of the match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday. The toss took place on time, but the start was delayed following continuous downpour in Ahmedabad.

The start of the all-important game, which will decide the second finalist of IPL 2025, has already been delayed by over 90 minutes. However, there is still enough time for a full-fledged 20-over match with an extra 120 minutes (2 hours) of allowance time before overs start getting reduced. 11:56 PM IST is the cut-off time for a minimum five-over match for a winner to be decided.

However, BCCI’s decision to move the Qualifier 2 from Kolkata to Ahmedabad despite the unpromising weather forecast in the city has not gone down well with the fans. Qualifier 2 and the final of IPL 2025 were originally scheduled to be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, however, both matches were shifted to Ahmedabad by the BCCI earlier this month.

BCCI stated that Qualifier 2 and the final were shifted from Kolkata to Ahmedabad due to weather conditions and other parameters. Ironically, rain played spoilsport in the 2nd Qualifier in Ahmedabad on Sunday, while the weather in Kolkata is fine, with no rain forecast. The fans thus slammed the Indian cricket board for the decision to change the venue of the 2nd Qualifier.

“Hyderabad and Kolkata were initially supposed to host the last four games before the one-week suspension of the tournament. The new venues for the Playoffs were decided by the IPL Governing Council keeping in mind the weather conditions and other parameters,” read an IPL statement on May 20.
