New Delhi: Nicholas Pooran etched his name in history books with a blistering half-century in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Nicholas Pooran (87 not out off 36 balls) smashed his third fifty of the campaign while Mitchell Marsh (81 off 48) scored his fourth half-century of the 2025 edition to help LSG post a massive 238/3 in 20 overs.

Pooran’s blazing knock included eight sixes and seven fours as he continued his sensational form. The left-handed West Indies batter displaced his LSG teammate Marsh to take the Orange Cap with 288 runs in five innings at a remarkable average of 72.00 and a strike rate of 225. The 87-run knock against KKR was his highest for the season.

Pooran’s record-breaking innings

During his swashbuckling knock, Pooran broke a long-standing record of Indian legend Virender Sehwag. Pooran became the second fastest batter to score 2000 IPL runs, reaching the mark in 1198 balls and overtaking Sehwag, who played the cash-rich league from 2008 to 2015. The dashing India opener took 1211 balls to reach the 2000-run mark in the IPL. KKR all-rounder Andre Russell tops the list.

Fastest to 2000 IPL runs (by balls faced)

1120 – Andre Russell
1198 – Nicholas Pooran
1211 – Virender Sehwag
1251 – Chris Gayle
1306 – Rishabh Pant
1309 – Glenn Maxwell

Meanwhile, Marsh hammered five sixes and six fours in his sensational knock to lay the foundation of a big score. He added 99 runs for the first wicket with Aiden Markram (47) and 71 runs for the second wicket with Pooran.

LSG’s 238/3 is the second-highest team total against KKR by any team, only behind PBKS’s 262/2 in their record-breaking chase at the Eden Gardens in IPL 2024. KKR bowlers endured a day to forget on a traditionally slow and dry surface.

Harshit Rana was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 51 while Varun Chakravarthy finished with 0/31. Spencer Johnson conceded 46 runs in his three, and Sunil Narine, too, was expensive.

Vaibhav Arora was KKR’s most economical bowler, conceding just 35 runs from his four overs.
