New Delhi: Indian pacer Mayank Yadav made his much-awaited comeback for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their clash against Mumbai Indians (MI) after a long injury layoff in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday, April 27. Mayank was out of action for over six months after suffering a lumbar stress injury during a T20I match between India and Bangladesh in October this year.
He was undergoing recovery at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He was expected to make his comeback earlier this month for LSG in the ongoing IPL 2025. However, his return was delayed further after he suffered a toe injury while undergoing recovery at the CoE. He finally returned to action for LSG against the Mumbai Indians on Sunday.
LSG skipper Rishabh Pant confirmed at the toss that Mayank was available and in the playing XI in place of Shardul Thakur.
“We are bowling first. In a day game, you want to utilise the surface. We are in a good space, and personally, It’s easier to put the team ahead, makes it easier. Eventually, you want to play good cricket and take every day as your first day. One change. Shardul is out and Mayank Yadav is in,” Pant said at the toss.
One of the fastest bowlers in Indian cricket, Mayank rose to fame after his heroics for LSG in IPL 2024 last year. The Delhi pacer rattled batters with his blistering pace, consistently clocking over 150kph. He played only four matches last season and picked up seven wickets, but managed to do enough to impress the LSG team management to retain him for Rs 11 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction last year.
Mayank Yadav dismisses Rohit Sharma on his IPL return
Mayank Yadav was handed the new ball by Rishabh Pant, and the pacer went on to dismiss Mumbai Indians opener Rohit Sharma in the Powerplay to draw the first blood for his team. Mayank opened the bowling for LSG, giving away only 6 runs in his first over. In his second over, Mayank was hit for back-to-back sixes by Rohit, but had the last laugh by dismissing the MI opener on 12 off 5 balls.
Mayank will be hoping to add to his wicket tally as the game progresses and help Lucknow Super Giants restrict Mumbai Indians to a low total at the Wankhede Stadium.
