New Delhi: Priyansh Arya blasted his maiden ton in the Indian Premier League and propelled Punjab Kings to a 18-run win over five-time champions Chennai Super Kings in an IPL 2025 match in Mullanpur on Tuesday.
Hosts Punjab won he toss and chose to bat and rookie Arya made the most of it, smashing 103 off 42 balls with the help of seven fours and nine sixes to lift Punjab Kings to a formidable 219/6.
In reply, Chennai were always behind in their run chase and were ultimately stopped at 201/5 with Devon Conway, who retired out on 69 off 49 deliveries being their top scorer.
MS Dhoni made a late dash with a 12 ball 27 but it was too little too late for CSK.
It was Punjab’s third win in four matches that kept them fourth on the points table as CSK lost their fourth successive match to be rooted at the nith spot among 10 teams.
Arya power
Earlier, young opener Arya showed why Punjab had kept faith on his abilities despite two consecutive low scores. He tonked a superb hundred to power Punjab to the big score of 219 for six.
The 24-year-old grabbed headlines by hitting six sixes in an over in a local league match last year and it was on full display as his knock lifted Punjab to their highest score at Mullanpur even after being reduced to 83/5 inside eight overs.
Arya made full use of the chances he got as he smashed seven boundaries and nine sixes to score the quickest century against CSK. Once Arya departed in the 14th over with the score on 154/6, Shashank Singh (52 not out off 36 balls) and number eight batter Marco Jansen (34 not out off 19) used the long handle to good effect.
CSK used six bowlers to stem the run flow but none were particularly successful. And even though Khaleel Ahmed and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up two wickets each, they conceded 45 and 48 runs in their four overs, respectively.
Brief Scores: Punjab Kings: 219 for 6 in 20 overs (Priyansh Arya 103, Shashank Singh 52 not out; Khaleel Ahmed 2/45).
Chennai Super Kings: 201 for 5 in 20 overs (Devon Conway 69 retired out, Shivam Dube 42; Lockie Ferguson 2/40).
