New Delhi: Gujarat Titans notched up a comfortable eight-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2025 on Wedensday, with their star overseas player Jos Buttler finishing as the match’s top-scorer.
Buttler remained unbeaten on 73 runs off 39 balls, as his five boundaries and six sixes helped GT chase down a 170-run target with 13 balls to spare.
GT opener Sai Sudharsan scored 49 off 36 balls (7×4, 1×6) while Shubman Gill scored 14 and Sherfane Rutherford was not out on 30 off 18 balls, studded with a boundary and three sixes.
GT won the toss and elected to field with their pacer Mohammed Siraj (3/19) produced a commanding spell to limit Royal Challengers Bengaluru to 169 for eight.
For RCB, Liam Livingstone was the top scorer with a 40-ball 54, including one four and five sixes.
Speaking after their win, Buttler credited the bowlers for shaping up their second straight win in the tournament.
“I really enjoyed it, I felt the bowlers did a fantastic job. If we fielded better, myself included, we would have chased less. It was a nice win and well deserved,” the keeper-batter said.
Buttler was not at his best with the gloves during the match, dropping a simple chance to give RCB opener Phil Salt a life off Siraj. But he couldn’t capitalise as he was dismissed for 14 off 13 balls.
Buttler said he was himself surprised to frop such a regulation catch, the ball slipping inbetween his hands and going down to the ground to the disbelief of his team-mates.
“I don’t know (on how he dropped Salt in the opening over), I feel pretty embarrassed. We know Salt is a dangerous player. I barely got a glove on it and it hit me in the chest, so was determined to score some runs.
“As a team, we did not field well but fielded poorly. There was a bit in the wicket, so the two openers played sensibly to take the sting out of that and set up the chase,” he said.
” I tried to play with freedom and intent – had a few months of unenjoyable cricket, trying to give my best and excited to be here. We have got a lot of bases covered – fantastic seam-bowling unit, the spinners and a fantastic batting unit as well.”
