New Delhi: After reports of indefinite suspension of the Indan Premier League (IPL) did the rounds in media circles on Friday because of the deepening military confrontation between India and Pakistan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued an official statement stating that the cash-rich league’s suspension would be for one week.
The Indian Cricket Board also said that it will provide further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament in due course after assessing the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
The BCCI, in a statement, said that the national interest comes above all considerations at a time when the country is fighting a war against terror and unwarranted aggression from across the border.
Question marks were raised about the future of the ongoing edition of the lucrative T20 league after Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was cancelled midway following air raid alerts in neighbouring cities of Jammu and Pathankot.
“The BCCI has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing IPL with immediate effect for one week,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated in a press release, contrary to early information from the Board that suggested that the suspension was indefinite.
The release also revealed that the decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after consulting with all key stakeholders including the franchises, who conveyed the concern and sentiments of their players, and also the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans.
BCCI reposes faith in the Indian Armed Forces
The Board also reposed full faith in the strength and preparedness of the Indian Military forces and expressed solidarity with the Government.
BCCI also thanked the official broadcaster (Jio Hotstar), the title sponsor (Tata) and all associate partners for “putting national interest above all other considerations.”
India carried out missile and drone attacks on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir earlier this week, as a retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed.
On Thursday, a blackout was enforced in several districts in India, including Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Mohali in Punjab and Chandigarh amid air raid alarms and reports of drone and missile attacks.
The Pakistan Super League was moved to the UAE on Thursday after India attacked Lahore, Rawalpindi, among other cities, with drones.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended for a week. BCCI, confirming the news through an official statement, said that it will take a call after assessing the situation in consultation with relevant authorities.
