New Delhi: Several sporting events across India have been affected amid the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan. The tensions between the two countries have intensified after the Indian armed forces conducted ‘Operation Sindoor’, targeting terrorist infrastructure in precision strikes across nine areas in Pakistan and the Pakistan-Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoK).
On Friday night, Pakistan launched a series of drone attacks across the border, targeting several military installations and other regions in Punjab, Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir. However, the drones were intercepted by the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force using both kinetic (weapons-based) and non-kinetic (electronic or jamming-based) methods.
Meanwhile, the escalating tensions have also resulted in heavy shelling from Pakistan across the Line of Control (LOC). Amid the ongoing standoff between India and Pakistan, multiple sporting events in India have been called off or postponed. Here is a look at some of the major sporting events affected due to the India-Pakistan conflict.
1) IPL 2025 suspended
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suspended the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for a week in the wake of the increasing tensions between India and Pakistan. The tournament was suspended after the match between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings was abandoned midway in Dharamshala on Thursday.
The match was called off, and the entire stadium, including the players, support staff and match officials, were evacuated after Pakistan launched an attack on the Pathankot air base, which is roughly just 85km away from Dharamshala. The BCCI is currently contemplating when to resume the tournament and conduct the remaining matches.
IPL 2025 was suspended after 58 completed matches in the tournament. 16 matches were left in the season, including the matches in the playoffs and the final scheduled for May 25. The England and Wales Cricket Board has reportedly offered to host the remainder of the IPL 2025 in England in September this year. However, it remains to be seen what decision BCCI will take.
2) Neeraj Chopra Classic postponed
The Neeraj Chopra Classic (NC Classic), a World Athletics A-level event and India’s first international javelin throw competition, has also been postponed indefinitely in the wake of the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The event was being organised by India’s double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra in collaboration with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and JSW Sports.
However, the mega event, which would have brought together some of the top athletes from across the world to India, now stands postponed. The mega event was scheduled to take place at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on May 24 this year.
3) Bengal Pro T20 League
The Bengal Pro T20 League, a T20 league organised by the Cricket Association of Bengal, has also been postponed in the wake of the growing India-Pakistan conflict. In a statement, the CAB confirmed that the second season of the T20 league has been postponed owing to the prevailing national circumstances. The board said that a revised schedule will be shared later after consultation with the government, stakeholders and the BCCI.
A number of sporting events in India, including the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 have been affected due to the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan.
