New Delhi: Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals has parted ways with long-time serving head coach Ricky Ponting, the franchise announced on its social media platforms on Saturday evening. The three-time Australian World Cup-winner joined the franchise in 2018 and guided the franchise to their lone IPL final appearance in 2020.
After multiple reports suggested that the franchise is set to part ways with the former Aussie captain following his failure to deliver an IPL trophy in his seven-year stint around here, the franchise issued a statement to confirm the news.
“Dear Ricky, as you move on as our Head Coach, we’re finding it incredibly hard to put this down in words. The four things you told us about in every huddle – care, commitment, attitude, and effort – they sum up our seven summers together,” the social media post of Delhi Capitals read.
Ponting has worked with different captains during his stint at Delhi Capitals. Gautam Gambhir, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and David Warner are the names he worked in close capacity of the leadership groups. Under the watch of the 49-year-old, Capitals saw their golden period when they made to the IPL playoffs for three consecutive seasons. Their best chance to lay hands on the IPL trophy came in 2020 when they finished as runners-up to Mumbai Indians in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Why Ricky Ponting and Delhi Ccapitals parted ways?
Despite Ricky Ponting’s stature of being an astute leader of a dominant Australian team during his playing era, he couldn’t do anything similar with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. In fact, the franchise failed to progress to the IPL playoffs in the last three seasons, including a ninth-place finish in IPL 2023 followed by a sixth-place in the league stage this year (IPL 2024).
According to a report by news agency PTI, the top management at Delhi Capitals conveyed their decision to Ponting that the franchise will move ahead of him after they were left unhappy with him not being able to win anything in seven years. The franchise seeks to revamp the coaching staff to meet the desired results.
