Tehran: A young woman on Saturday reportedly stripped down to her underwear at an Iranian university in protest against Iran’s strict Islamic dress code, as per Reuters.
Furthermore, the footage was posted by the Iranian student outlet Amir Kabir Newsletter showing the security guards of the organisation detaining the woman at the Islamic Azad University.
The video since then has been circulated by several Persian-language news platforms like the Hengaw rights group, IranWire, and Amnesty International.
Following the incident, University spokesperson Amir Mahjob said on X that the police officials discovered that the woman was under severe mental pressure and had a mental disorder.
According to Hamshahri Daily, the woman’s condition remains to be unclear, but an “informed source,” said that she might be transferred to a mental hospital following further investigation.
However, the student newsletter alleged that the woman was beaten during the arrest.
Meanwhile, Amnesty International condemned the arrest, stating, “Iran’s authorities must immediately and unconditionally release the university student… Pending her release, authorities must protect her from torture and ensure access to her family and lawyer.”
This comes as in 2022, a near-nationwide protest broke out in Iran after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurdish woman who was arrested for allegedly violating hijab rules.
