New Delhi: Ace New Zealand pacer Tim Southee will be joining forces with the senior men’s England cricket team in the capacity of a “specialist skills consultant”, as announced by the England Cricket Board (ECB) on Thursday. He has been confirmed on a short-term deal as the replacement of James Anderson in their coaching staff across formats, for the upcoming summer.
This means Southee will link up with his former New Zealand skipper, Brendon McCullum, right before England’s first Test match of the summer, against Zimbabwe in Nottingham next week. Despite the official title of the role, Southee’s appointment comes in as a like-for-like replacement for Anderson, who himself donned the coaching hat only after capping a 21-year Test career for England, which ended at Lord’s last July.
However, this summer, Anderson has prioritised a deal with Lancashire to play for them full season, and for whom he could make his first appearance of the season later this month after recovering from a calf injury. In a press release, the ECB welcomed Southee, saying, “With his vast experience of playing in a wide range of conditions around the world and across all formats, he brings valuable insight and knowledge to the players.”
