Iran’s Assembly of Experts has reportedly selected Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as his successor. The decision, made during a secretive meeting on September 26, was revealed by Israeli media outlet Ynet News, citing Iran International.
Mojtaba Khamenei has been gaining influence within the regime over the last two years. Despite rarely appearing in public, he is known for his role in suppressing the 2009 post-election protests. In 2021, he was granted the title of Ayatollah, fulfilling the constitutional requirements to become Supreme Leader.
The decision to appoint him was reportedly kept secret to prevent public backlash. Iran International stated, “The assembly resolved to maintain maximum secrecy over the decision due to fears of widespread public protest.” Members were also warned of severe consequences if any information was leaked.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has held the position of Supreme Leader since 1989, succeeding Ruhollah Khomeini, the first leader to hold the title.
