New Delhi: In what can bring in huge relief to crores of train travellers, the Ministry of Railways is planning to introduce changes to the Tatkal ticketing process on IRCTC. In an attempt to stop malpractices and make the Tatkal ticketing process more robust, the government is planning to make e-Aadhaar authentication mandatory for Tatkal train ticket bookings.

Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Indian Railways will be implementing e-Aadhaar authentication for Tatkal ticket booking service.

“Bharatiya Railways will soon start using e-Aadhaar authentication to book Tatkal tickets. This will help genuine users get confirmed tickets during need,” Vaishnaw posted on X.

One introduced, the e-Aadhaar authentication for Tatkal ticket booking service would help curb misuse increase the availability of train tickets for genuine passengers who at present have a harrowing experience while booking tickets under the tatkal quota.

Ministry of Railways informed that Indian Railways has cracked down on unauthorised automated nookings which has boosted website access for genuine users. The AI-powered BOT Mitigation enhances fair ticket bookings and 2.5 crore suspicious user IDs have been deactivated, it stated.

“Indian Railways has undertaken a comprehensive digital overhaul of its ticketing infrastructure. Through the deployment of cutting-edge anti-BOT systems and integration with a leading Content Delivery Network (CDN) service provider, the Railways has significantly curbed unauthorized automated bookings by unscrupulous agents and improved the access of the web site to the genuine users,” the Ministry of Railways stated in a release.

On May 22, 2025, 31,814 tickets were booked, which was the highest-ever per-minute booking. This showcases the robustness and scalability of the upgraded platform.

“To further enhance fairness and efficiency, new user protocols have been introduced. Users not authenticated via Aadhaar can book Opening ARP, Tatkal or Premium Tatkal tickets only after 3 days of registration, while Aadhaar-verified users can book tickets without delay,” it further stated.

 The Indian Railways, through IRCTC, will introduce mandatory e-Aadhaar authentication for booking tatkal tickets.
