Is your kid prone to vision problems? Know the early signs

New Delhi: A baby’s ability to see is incredibly important for their growth and learning, helping them recognize familiar faces and discover the world around them. Even though regular vision check-ups for kids are vital, parents are the first to notice any possible eye problems. Catching these issues in the early months and years does have a bearing on how well treatments work and affect a child’s eye health down the line. Dr. Rishi Raj Borah, Country Director, Orbis(India), spoke about the early onset of vision problems in children, its signs, and why early diagnosis is important.

Warning signs of vision problems in children by age

For Babies (Up to 1 Year):

  1. By 3 months: Your baby should be able to track moving objects and make steady eye contact. If they seem unable to focus or follow objects, mention this to their doctor.
  2. After 4 months: While newborns sometimes have misaligned eyes, persistent inward crossing or outward drifting after 4 months is a concern and should be checked.

For Pre-schoolers:

  1. Even if your child doesn’t report vision issues, conditions like lazy eye (amblyopia) may not show obvious signs. Regular vision checks with a paediatrician or eye specialist are important.
  2. If your child’s eyes suddenly become misaligned, seek medical advice immediately.

General Signs for All Children:

Watch for the following symptoms at any age and consult a doctor if you notice:

  1. Eyes that appear misaligned (crossed or turned outward)
  2. A white or greyish spot in the pupil
  3. Rapid, uncontrolled eye movements
  4. Complaints of eye pain, itchiness, or discomfort
  5. Persistent redness, pus, or crust in the eyes
  6. Excessive tearing (beyond normal crying)
  7. Drooping eyelids
  8. Increased sensitivity to light

Why Early Intervention Matters

Detecting and treating eye issues early can prevent long-term vision problems and help children reach important developmental milestones. Clear vision supports motor skills development, learning, and emotional well-being. Regular check-ups, combined with parental awareness, can help ensure your child has the best possible start in life.
If you have concerns about your baby’s eyesight, don’t wait—speak with their doctor. Early action can make all the difference in protecting your child’s vision for the future. A simple eye exam today could prevent serious vision problems later, ensuring your child sees the world with clarity and confidence.

Vision problems in children can take some time to manifest at first, but it can worsen overtime. Therefore, it is imperative to know the early signs and act on it timely.  Health Conditions Health News: Latest News from Health Care, Mental Health, Weight Loss, Disease, Nutrition, Healthcare
