Suffering from high BP? Study finds daily pill with three low-dose drugs works more effectively

New Delhi: Hypertension is a ‘silent killer’ they say! This is to a very extent true too. In India, the condition is prevalent in more than 1 in 4 individuals and a total of more than 90 per cent of adults with hypertension are either underdiagnosed, untreated or are getting treatment but with uncontrolled hypertension. But there is good news for people suffering from uncontrolled hypertension, according to the new study released on Saturday indicated that taking a single pill with low doses of three anti-hypertensive drugs once a day can significantly reduce the blood pressure (BP) rate as compared to the standard care methods.

According to the estimated data, over a billion adults suffer hypertension across the world, with two-thirds living in low- and middle-income countries.

Know about ‘GMRx2’- anti-hypertensive drugs

The study further noted that the treatment based on a novel combination of lower doses of three anti-hypertensive drugs in a single medicine called ‘GMRx2’ was found to be great to be a high-quality standard care treatment plan at reducing blood pressure in patients, as per the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

This standard care treatment plan was suggested by the Nigerian Ministry of Health starting with a monotherapy, followed by a dual and triple combination therapy, and was typical of hypertension guidelines for numerous countries.

How does the drug work?

The trial results were led by The George Institute for Global Health and were later presented at the ‘European Society of Cardiology Congress 2024’.  The systolic blood pressure was compared in the patients during the research. The study found, that after six-month treatment, home systolic blood pressure was 31 mm Hg which is lower in the ‘GMRx2’ group when compared to 26 mm Hg lower with standard care. Moreover, the 5.8 mm Hg difference was clinically high and statistically important.

The study noted that existing proof shows that with every 5 mm Hg reduction in systolic blood pressure, there is a 10 per cent lower in major heart diseases like stroke, heart attacks and heart failure. Going further, just after a month, 81 per cent of the participants in the ‘GMRx2’ group achieved clinic-measured blood pressure control as compared to 55 per cent with standard care.
