New Delhi: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) Ishan Kishan’s dismissal against his former team Mumbai Indians (MI), sparked a massive controversy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Wednesday, April 23. Kishan walked off the pitch without waiting for the umpire’s call after appearing to have edged a delivery from Deepak Chahar, which was caught by wicket-keeper Ryan Rickelton. However, replays later confirmed the batter had not edged the ball.
The bizarre dismissal took place in the third over of SRH’s innings after the hosts were asked to bat first in the game at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Chahar cramped Ishan for room with a delivery on the leg side, with the ball passing close to his bat. While it appeared a wide ball to the naked eye, Ishan shockingly started walking even before the on-field umpire had raised his finger.
As Ishan began walking, umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal, who was initially hesitant, eventually raised his finger to confirm the dismissal. The Mumbai Indians players were elated as skipper Hardik Pandya also gave Ishan a pat on his back, appreciating his fair play gesture. However, the replays confirmed that the ball did not touch Ishan’s gloves or bat, and he would not have been out had he opted for a review.

Umpire comes under the scanner
The viral video of the bizarre dismissal has also put on-field umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal under the scanner. In the video of Ishan’s dismissal, Madangopal can be seen initially raising his right hand for probably signalling a wide before raising his finger. He can be seen raising his finger despite no appeal initially from the bowler.
The video of the dismissal has sparked controversy on social media, with many questioning the umpire’s decision.
