New Delhi: Indian Super League’s record goal scorer in a campaign Alaaeddine Ajaraie has agreed to extend his stay at NorthEast United FC by another year.

The Moroccan scored a record 23 goals, alongside seven assists for his team-mates in 25 matches of the 2024-25 season as they finished fourth in the league behind Mohun Bagan who defended their Shield Crown.

They then lost in the semi-finals of the ISL Cup to FC Goa, who then went down to Bagan in the final. The winger won the Golden Boot award and was also adjudged the best player of the league for which he received the Golden Ball.

Prior to the ISL, the 32-year-old helped NorthEast lift their first major trophy in Indian football, scoring, setting up a goal and converting his penalty in the shootout as they beat Bagan in the final to win the Durand Cup.

Ajaraie netted 29 goals and 10 assists across 32 appearances in all competitions, opening his account on his club debut against Border Security Force in the Durand Cup.

He capped off his maiden season in Indian with his first hat-trick for NorthEast in a dominant 6-0 victory over Mohammedan SC in the Kalinga Super Cup.

“I am happy here; NorthEast feels like home now. My teammates and the staff played a crucial role in my successful first season, and I am confident we can achieve even more together next season. I am eager to continue this journey and win significant titles with this fantastic club,” Ajaraie said in a statement from the club.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Alaaeddine will continue with us. His impact, both on the field with his fantastic performances and off it with his exemplary character and support for his teammates, has been immense,” NEUFC’s head coach Juan Pedro Benali said.

“He’s a true role model for our young players, and we eagerly anticipate another successful season together.”

“Alaaeddine has been one of the best players I have seen in Indian football. He has redefined excellence in Indian football with his performances,” the club’s CEO Mandar Tamhane said.

“His humble attitude, commitment, and professionalism have made him a cornerstone of our squad. We are confident that he will continue to set new benchmarks in Indian football in the upcoming season.”
