New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu believes that India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics is moving in the right direction and hosting the sporting extravaganza will inspire millions of people in the country. The President, who was interacting with senior PTI editors at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday, also expressed her admiration for sports like Kabaddi in the country.
President Murmu said said that she likes to watch sports but did not get many opportunities to play. She added that whenever she did get some time off, she preferred Indian sports specifically.
“I do like watching sports although I did not get too many opportunities to play. But when I could, I preferred Indian sports,” Murmu said.
“The Olympics should definitely happen in India. It would inspire people and promote merit in sports,” the President, who also wrote an exclusive signed article for PTI on crimes against women, said.
Decision on host country to be taken in 2,3 years
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to take the decision on the host country in next couple of years as they will initiate the process only after holding elections next year. The decision, in all probability, will not be taken before 2026 or 2027. Apart from India, countries like Poland, Mexico, Indonesia, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have expressed interest in bidding for the Games.
Last month, she had shared pictures of her playing badminton with the trailblazing Saina Nehwal at the Rashtrapati Bhavan captioning it as “natural love for sports”. Meanwhile, the President also flagged off the trophy tour for Asia’s oldest football tournament, Durand Cup, from Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation during Independence Day celebrations earlier this month, had also expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to conduct the showpiece event.
President Droupadi Murmu feels that India’s ambitious bid to host the 2036 Olympics is a step in the right direction as it would not just inspire people but also promote meritocracy in the country’s sporting landscape.
