New Delhi: Jannik Sinner has ended 2024 as the World No.1 men’s tennis player in the ATP rankings and has been presented with a trophy during his first rest day at the ongoing ATP Finals in Turin
He had entered the season-ending tournament assured of becoming the year-end top ranked player.
“It’s very special occasion to share that here in Italy,” the Italian said, as quoted by AFP.
“I would like to thank you for the support around the world, to thank my team. Without the people who are close to me, who understand me as a person, who I am, it would be very difficult.
Sinner also called himself “very lucky” as he has been engulfed in controversy this year after testing positive for banned drugs twice.
In March, Sinner’s urine samples were found to have traces of the steroid clostebol but escaped sanction from the International Tennis Integrity Agency.
The World Anti-Doping Agency appealed the intial clearance handed to him by ITIA in September and sought a ban of a maximum of two years.
Sinner replaces Serbian star Novak Djokovic, who finished the year-end as the top ranked player a record eight times.
He defeated Australia’s Alex De Minaur in first match of the ATP finals on Sunday.
He was handed the year end No.1 trophy in the presence of German great Boris Becker.
“There are certainly Carlos Alcaraz and others, Jannik is going to be world No.1 for a long time,” Becker said, as quoted AFP.
