New Delhi: World no. 1 Jannik Sinner trumped 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic 6–4, 7–5, 7–6(3) in the French Open 2025 men’s singles semifinal on Friday, at the famous Court Philippe-Chatrier of Stade Roland Garros in Paris. The 23-year-old Italian secured his first-ever final berth at the Roland-Garros, that too without dropping a set in the tournament, and also extended his Grand Slam match-winning streak to 20.
Sinner delivered a masterclass in precision and power that left the Serbian champ nowhere near him in counterattacking. His brilliant baseline play and formidable forehand led the tempo from the get-go, as in the first set, he broke Djokovic’s serve early and maintained his advantage to bag it 6–4. The second set, however, saw Djokovic turning up his game, but Sinner was unshaken and broke at a critical juncture, taking the set 7–5.

The 38-year-old sixth seed was only a set away from losing the crucial clash and therefore gave Sinner a tough time in the third set. It was a testament to both players’ resilience as Djokovic, who aimed for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title, displayed glimpses of his legendary defense. But… Sinner’s consistency forced him into a tiebreak, where he rose to a 7–3 victory, sealing the game in straight sets.
After the game, Djokovic hinted at the possibility of this being his final appearance at the clay courts of Roland Garros as he expressed gratitude to the crowd and reflected on his illustrious career. “This could have been the last match I ever played here, so I don’t know,” Djokovic remarked as he acknowledged the emotions running through him at that moment.

Final with Alcaraz!
This emphatic victory by Sinner has set up a highly anticipated final against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, as it marks their first encounter at the Grand Slam final. Although Alcaraz leads their head-to-head record with 7-4, including a recent win on clay at the Italian Open, it is a fourth Slam final for Sinner, and just like the Spaniard, he has never lost one.

Sinner is going to eye his first French Open title, and his performance against the experienced Djokovic underlines his readiness to ascend to the peak of the sport. A Roland-Garros title is rather elusive, being dubbed as the toughest Slam to achieve of all four, due to the different demands of the clay courts. For Djokovic, the game was a symbol of potentially passing the torch to the next generation of talent.
The French Open 2025 final between Sinner and Alcaraz will take place at the same venue on Sunday, June 8, and is set to be a defining moment in men’s singles tennis as a new champion might arise, and if not, a 22-year-old might be successfully defending his French Open crown.
