New Delhi: India were eliminated from the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship on Friday after getting blanked by Japan 3-0 in the quarterfinal tie played at the Conson Gymnasium in Qingdao, China. This will be the second time for India to make exit from the last 8 stage after qualifying for the knockouts in the history of the continental tournament.

India lost all three ties in mixed doubles, women’s singles and men’s singles to dash any hopes for a potential fightback by the doubles pair. Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha lost to the Japan mixed double pair of Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito 21-13, 17-21, 21-13.

Singles shuttlers fail to shoulder responsibility

Malvika Bansod, who was the lone player left in women’s singles in India’s squad after veteran shuttler PV Sindhu pulled out of the tournament owing an injury, was drubbed by Tomoka Miyazaki in straight games 21-12, 21-19 as Japan moved in the driver’s seat with a 2-0 cushion.

The challenge was for world championship bronze medallist HS Prannoy to get better of Kenta Nishimoto in the men’s singles to keep India’s hopes alive. Despite the valiant efforts, the Kerala shuttler wasn’t composed to get the lead in the decider, where he went down heavily, resulting in an overall defeat 21-14, 15-21, 21-12.

This meant that women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand and the star men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty couldn’t be in contention against Arisa Igarashi-Ayako Sakuramoto and Takumi Nomura-Yuichi Shimogami pairs, respectively. The unassailable lead was confirmed for Japan after Prannoy lost six straight points in the decider after narrowing to close the gap of 6-1 which later turned into 13-6 but the Indian came closer for a fight at 12-15.

India blanked Macau China 5-0 to start their campaign in the Asian mixed team event in Group D before they went down to Singapore in a thrilling 3-2 fight.

India’s Badminton team suffered a 3-0 defeat against Japan in the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship (BAMTC) 2025 quarterfinals. Despite valiant efforts from HS Prannoy and mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, India couldn’t secure a single win against the formidable Japanese counterparts.  Badminton Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
