New Delhi: The Jared Cannonier vs Gregory Rodrigues main event middleweight bout received the fight of the night award at the UFC Vegas 102 main event on Saturday (February 15) at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas. The high-octane clash between the American professional and the Brazilian MMA professional turned out to be a thrilling encounter.
Rodrigues displayed some solid knockdowns to start off the proceedings before Cannonier made a fashionable comeback. In the third round, Cannonier unleashed an elbow punch in the closing seconds. The Brazilian didn’t recover in the break between third and fourth rounds. The American opened punches in the fourth round.
“Gregory hits hard, and he was slinging big shots. I was able to weather the storm, and keep my composure even in those really tough spots, and work my way back up to my feet,” Cannonier said after the match.
“I’d rather die on my feet than die on my back. When you step in the Octagon on fight night, it’s brand new every time, so it’s hard to really lean on that experience, even though it’s my seventh main event,” he added.
Kattar vs. Zalal
Calvin Kattar, the No.10 featherweight, was against Youssef Zalal. The Morrocan Zalal started the fight with some tremendous footwork. He was relentless in his fight even though Kattar threw everything in the three rounds to eventually win by the unanimous decision. Zalal will improve his rankings in the featherweight.
“This is a young man’s sport. It’s an honor to share the cage with Calvin Kattar, he’s going to be a Hall of Famer 100%. I had to respect his power,” Zalal said after the match.
In the other bout of the main card, Edmen Shahbazyan and Nazim Sadykhov eased past Dylan Budka and Ismael Bonfim in the first round of a middleweight and lightweight bout, respectively, while Andre Petroski won with a decision win.
