New Delhi: Italian top seed Jasmine Paolini produced a dominant display in the final to thrash world no.4 Coco Gauff to claim her maiden Italian Open title. Paolini scripted history with her title triumph in Rome as she became the first Italian woman in four decades to win the prestigious WTA 1000 singles title at home.
Paolini was far from a favourite heading into the all-important summit clash but produced a gritty performance to outclass Gauff. The Italian defeated Gauf 6-4, 6-2 in a lop-sided encounter at the Campo Centrale in Rome to become the first Italian woman since Raffaella Reggi in 1985 to clinch the Italian Open women’s singles crown.
Gauff headed into the final after beating the likes of Mirra Andreeva, Emma Raducanu and Zheng Qinwen, while Paolini had to get the better of the likes of Ons Jabeur and Jelena Ostapenko to make it to the final. With the home crowd behind her and the Italian president, Sergio Mattarella watching from the stands, Paolini cruised to victory against the better-ranked American.
