Jasprit Bumrah scripts history, breaks 46-year-old record in 5th Test vs Australia

New Delhi: Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah scripted history on Saturday by surpassing the legendary Bishan Singh Bedi to break a 46-year-old record for India in the ongoing 5th Test against Australia in Sydney in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Bumrah shattered the record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler in a Test series in Australia. He achieved the elusive feat during Day 2 of the 5th Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Bumrah, who drew the first blood for India by dismissing Usman Khawaja cheaply on 2 right before stumps on Day 1, continued his stellar run with the ball in the morning session on Day 5. Bumrah got rid of Australia’s no.3 Marnus Labuschagne cheaply on just 2 off 8 balls in the 7th over of the hosts’ first innings to take his wickets tally to 32 in the series and surpass Bedi.

Bumrah managed to induce a thin edge of Labuschagne’s bat with Rishabh Pant taking a comfortable catch behind the stumps to hand India their first wicket on Day 2. The on-field umpire had initially ruled Labuschagne not out as he was not convinced if there was an edge but had to reverse his decision after India opted for DRS.

The wicket saw Bumrah go past Bedi, who previously held the record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler in Australia for his 31 wickets during the India-Australia Test series in 1977-78. Bumrah now has 32 wickets in the ongoing series so far and has a chance to add more wickets to his tally as the 5th Test progresses.

Most wickets for India in a Test series in Australia:
