New Delhi: England batter Joe Root has finally broken his silence on breaking the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of most runs in Test cricket. Root has been in incredible form in Tests for England over the last few years and has been shattering records one after another with his remarkable consistency.
Root slammed a brilliant knock of 262 runs to help England thrash Pakistan by an innings and 47 runs in the 1st Test between the two sides in Multan on Friday. It was Root’s 35th Test ton which also saw him surpass former England captain Alastair Cook to become the leading run-getter for his country in the longest format.
Since 2021, Root has arguably been the best batter in the world with a whopping 4841 runs in Tests at a brilliant average of 58.32, the most by any batter in the period. He has also smashed 18 centuries in the period which is the highest by any batter in the world.
The former England batter has 12664 runs to his name in 147 matches in his Test career so far and is the only active batter with a realistic chance of breaking Tendulkar’s record of most runs in Test history. While Root is currently the 5th highest run-getter in Tests, Tendulkar is on the top of the elite list with a staggering 15,921 runs from 200 matches, including 51 centuries.
“I’ve no idea. It’s some way off yet,” Root said when asked if he was aware of how far he was from breaking Tendulkar’s record.
Joe Root reveals how he bounced back from his struggles in Test cricket
Root had gone a year without scoring a century in Tests before sparking a turnaround at the start of 2021. The England batter revealed he worked on his game during the COVID-19 break which helped him turn a corner. The prolific right-hander said he worked on his shortcomings during the period which helped him regain his rhythm.
“In Covid, I spent that period off really looking at my game, the areas where I felt there were little holes and weaknesses in it, and just really trying to have a really good understanding of my strengths and weaknesses,” said Root.
“And then work with the strengths and try to tighten up the areas within my game that needed to just probably raise the level,” he added.
The England batter has been unstoppable ever since and has gone on to smash a stunning 18 centuries in just 3.5 years. Root will be next eyeing Rahul Dravid’s record as he needs only 625 runs to go past the India legend in the list of all-time highest run-getters in Test cricket.
