Joe Root recalled, no Ben Stokes as England announce squad for Champions Trophy

New Delhi: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Sunday announced squad for the ICC Champions Trophy and the white-ball tour of India. Senior batter Joe Root has been recalled to the 15-men squad which will be led by Jos Buttler.

Although the schedule for the Champions Trophy hasn’t been announced by the International Cricket Council, the ECB becomes the first board to reveal its squad for the eight-team event. England Test skipper and star all-rounder Ben Stokes hasn’t been considered for the selection owing to the hamstring injury sustained in the Test series against New Zealand earlier this month.

Root, who hasn’t played an ODI match since England’s dismal campaign at the 2023 World Cup, will be crucial for the team’s batting core. He has played 171 matches and scored 6522 runs at an average of 47.60.

Mark Wood’s addition bolsters pace department

Pace bowler Mark Wood has also returned to the white-ball setup after being out of action for last six months because of an injury in his right elbow. This makes England’s pace department at full strength with the likes of Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinsont, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse and Saqib Mahmood boasting it. Adil Rashid will be the frontline spinner with Jacob Bethell and Joe Root to be the backup options.
