New Delhi: Joe Root added another feather to his illustrious cap as he became England’s leading run-getter in ODIs on Sunday, June 01. Root surpassed former captain Eoin Morgan to take the top spot on the elite list of highest run-getters for England in ODIs. Root achieved the elusive milestone during the 2nd ODI between England and West Indies at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Sunday.

Root went past Morgan en route to his half-century against West Indies during England’s 309-run chase. Root, who came out to bat at number 3, helped England get their chase back on track after the hosts lost both their openers on a duck. Jamie Smith was dismissed on a 4-ball duck by pacer Jayden Seales in the first over before Matthew Forde removed Ben Duckett on a 3-ball duck in the next over.

England were left in a spot of bother at 2/2 in the second over in the tricky chase, but Root helped them stage a fightback. The senior batter combined with skipper Harry Brook (47) to add an 85-run stand for the third wicket. He went on to complete his half-century off 51 deliveries while also surpassing Morgan to become England’s leading run-getter of all time.

Root overtook Morgan, who finished his career with 6957 runs for England in 225 ODIs at an average of 39.75 and a strike rate of 93.89, including 13 centuries and 42 fifties. Root has managed to go past the former England captain in just 179 matches. The senior England batter has over 6970 runs to his name in 179 matches at an average close to 49, including 17 centuries and 43 fifties.
