New Delhi: Germany men’s football head coach Julian Nagelsmann has extended his contract to stay in his post until the 2028 European Championship tournament as confirmed by the German Football Association (DFB). Nagelsman took over the helms of Germany in September 2023 replacing Hansi Flick on a short-tenure deal and had led the side to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 at home, losing to eventual winners Spain.
The former Bayern Munich coach had previously extended his contract in April 2024, signing to remain till World Cup 2026 to be held jointly in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Nagelsmann started his coaching career with Hoffenheim, becoming the youngest Bundesliga coach at the age of 28. He then went on to coach RB Leipzig and Bayern. His tenure with the Bavarians was short and was sacked and replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

Germany’s upcoming fixture will see them face Italy for a two-legged quarter-final game in the Nations League. Nagelsmann was the second youngest ever to become German head coach, aged then 36. In a statement, Nagelsmann expressed his delight noting that he hadn’t expected to be with the side beyond Euro 2024. He concluded that he along with the team wanted to win titles together.
What does Julian Nagelsmann’s contract extension mean for German football?
From DFB’s point of view, this is a logical next step as the contract would stop Nagelsmann from returning to club football management after the World Cup 2026. Having brought a good vibe to the team and restored the German national side’s image to a large extent, Germany won’t want to let go of the 37-year-old manager anytime soon.
With a talented generation of footballers like Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz coming off their age, while Aleksandar Pavlovic and Rocco Reitz showing promising signs, Nagelsmann could be leading the side to new heights. Having not won a major trophy since 2014, in recent years, Nagelsmann has the firepower to change that very soon.
Julian Nagelsmann will stay with the German men’s football team until Euro 2028, extending his contract for two more years having led his team to Euro 2024 quarterfinals. Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
