BRS MP K Keshava Rao resigned from his Rajya Sabha seat on Thursday and sent his resignation letter to RS Chairman and VP Jagdeep Dhankar, a day after joining Congress.
A vacancy has now been created in the Upper House of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, after RS Chairman Dhankar accepted Keshava Rao’s resignation on Friday, reports said.
Keshava Rao had announced his decision to quit BRS in March this year to join the grand old party. A by-election will have to be held to fill this vacancy. His resignation comes two years before the tenure ends.
Congress in a fix over defected BRS MLAs:
KK’s resignation on ethical grounds likely puts Congress in a fix over the defection of BRS MLAs over the last few months.
The BRS is asking for resignations from the six MLAs who defected to Congress in recent times. The party urged Assembly Speaker G Prasada Rao to disqualify the MLAs as per anti-defection law and filed a case in the high court to seek their disqualification.
Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender was the first leader to defect from the BRS. It was followed by defections of Tellam Venkat Rao, Kadiyam Srihari, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, Sanjay Kumar and Kale Yadaiah.
Taking to social media platform X, BRS leader KT Rama Rao hit out at Rahul Gandhi and Revanth Reddy over the issue. “BRS MP Keshava Rao tendered resignation after joining the Congress party. Welcome his decision What about the BRS MLA who defected and contested Loksabha on Congress ticket? What about half a dozen other BRS MLAs who defected to congress?
Tagging Gandhi, he questioned Gandhi about defending the constitution. “Is this how you are going to uphold the constitution? If you can’t make BRS MLAs resign, how would Nation trust that you were committed to schedule 10 amendment as per congress manifesto? Yeh Kaisa Nyay Patra Hain?”
As per reports, the Congress can get KK re-elected to Rajya Sabha as they have numbers. Assembly bypolls are different as there is no guarantee that the candidates may win on a Congress ticket.
