Chennai: The Supreme Court Collegium recommended elevating Justice KR Shriram of the Bombay High Court as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
In a parallel developement, the five-member SC Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud recommended Madras High Court Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan for appointment as apex court judge.
Lawyers congratulated MadrasHighCourt Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan following the recommendation of his name for appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court. ACJ thanked them before commencing the hearing for the day on Friday.
Profile of Justice KR Shriram
Justice KR Shriram was born in Mumbai and completed his B Com in Financial Accounting and Management and LLB from the University of Mumbai, followed by his LLM (maritime law) from King’s College, London.
Then on July 3, 1986, he enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa and joined Senior Advocate S Venkiteswaran’s Chambers.
Since 1997, he started handling cases on his own. He has dealt with commercial matters with expertise in shipping and international trade law. He was proficient in handling company legal matters, Writ matters arising from port laws, customs law, motor vehicle law, and marine insurance (including reinsurance and P&I) etc.
On June 21, 2013, Justice Shriram was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court. He was subsequently confirmed as a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court on 2 March 2016. After about 8 years, he has been recommeded to the position of Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
