‘Kabootar ki tarah koodta rehta hai’: Umpire Anil Chaudhary’s sarcastic jibe at Mohammad Rizwan

New Delhi: Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary gave his honest take on Pakistan wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan for his excessive appealing habit. Rizwan is known for his loud appeals on almost each delivery during a match which sometimes frustrate the viewers and Chaudhary, an international umpire feels quite similar about him. Chaudhary boasts a wealth of experience, standing as an official in numerous international games.

Chaudhary was a recent guest on a YouTube-based podcast show where he was asked about his umpiring experience and notable instances from the field. One of the hosts switched to ask Chaudhary about Rizwan, who is infamous for his appealing techniques which very much irritate the crowd, notably because most of them go in vain as the opponent batter turns out to be not out.

A video clip of the conversation has been making rounds on the internet where Chaudhary drew parallels between Rizwan’s umpiring and a pigeon with respect to his excessive jumps behind the stump. He also mentioned that he takes into consideration Rizwan’s tendency to appeal excessively before making a decision on them.

“He appeals a lot. I even told my fellow umpire to stay aware. Har ball pe chillata hai (He keeps shouting on every ball). The one who puts something like a lipstick (sunscreen), right? Kabootar ki tarah koodta rehta hai (He keeps jumping like a pigeon),” Chaudhary said on 2 Sloggers podcast.

Technology has evolved – Chaudhary

Chaudhary also stated that the technology part in cricket has evolved too much and that such tactics only paint the player in a bad image, them being responsible as well. “Aur itna technology aa gaya hai, kyun apna beizatti karwa rahe ho? Ulta seedha nikal jayega, to log aap hi ka mazaak udayenge (When technology has evolved so much, why do you have to make yourself look bad? People do make fun of such things),” Chaudhary said. Rizwan’s dramatic performances behind the stumps have brought a lot of memes on the internet as some criticise him while some have a good laugh over him.
