Palakkad/Wayanad: Elephant attacks on passengers travelling by road from Kerala to the two neighboring states – Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and vice versa has become a normal affair with at least 20 incidents reported in Wayanad, Palakkad and Thrissur. With no steps initiated by either the forest officials of any of these states, travelling in these regions during late night hours have become a nightmare.
The latest of such attacks was reported when a wild elephant charged at a motorcycle on the Kozhikode-Mysuru Road on Thursday evening. The incident, captured on video, showed the elephant attempting to attack the motorcyclist seemingly with no provocation. The region has witnessed multiple incidents of the similar nature, and some of them were recorded by passengers and has become viral.
The motorcyclists involved were from Tamil Nadu. As the elephant advanced, they abandoned their bike and fled. The video captured one of them falling while running away.
June 20th witnessed a similar incident in Athirappalli in Thrissur where an interstate KSRTC bus was stopped by a rogue tusker popularly called as ‘Kabali’. The tusker can be seen blocking the KSRTC bus for nearly 20 minutes and it was after efforts by few locals in the area that the tusker moved to the forest.
The video of the 2 incidents has gone viral in social media.
“It has become a nightmare travelling through the ghat roads to Tamil Nadu late evening. Elephants can be seen on the roads and at times it become violent after hearing the sound of the vehicle”, said Manikuttan, a trader who travels to Tamil Nadu from Palakkad every three days.
