New Delhi: Wednesday turned out to be an unfortunate day for India at the Paris Olympics 2024 as ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat faced a massive blow in her chase for the elusive gold medal. Despite her rigorous training, which included cycling and skipping after the semifinal win, Phogat missed the chance of giving India their first gold medal at the Summer Games.
Devastated by the disqualification announcement, the star wrestler, who has earned name and fame in the arena of the sport, will return to her motherland without any medal. Enroute to the finals, Vinesh showcased her best performance as she registered dominant wins against her opponents but faced misery a day after.
Know all about the wrestling weigh-in rules
According to the rule book, weigh-in session is conducted each morning for the relevant weight category in the Olympics. On the second morning, only wrestlers participating in the repechages and finals need to undergo the weigh-in, which lasts 15 minutes. The wrestlers then have to present their license and accreditation during the medical examination and weigh-in. Wrestlers must be in perfect physical condition, including having their fingernails cut very short.
What happens during the weigh-in period?
During the critical weigh-in period, wrestlers are allowed to get on the scale multiple times and referees have to ensure that they meet the weight requirements for their respective weight category and also follow the dress code. If a wrestler is not wearing proper attire, he or she will not be weighed. If a wrestler fails to attend or pass the weigh-in, they will be eliminated from the competition and ranked last, without rank.
Vinesh, who was competing in the 50 kg freestyle wrestling category, was found 100 grams over the 50-kg weight limit for her event. The wrestler, who usually competes in the 53 kg category, shed her weight for the Paris Olympics.
