New Delhi: Argentine star Lionel Messi is close to extending his stay at the Major League Soccer club Inter Miami and leading the club into its new chapter at Miami Freedom Park. The 2022 World Cup winner joined the club midway through the 2023 season, and his current contract is set to expire at the end of 2025.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner made an instant impact at the club, which was struggling in the MLS before his arrival. Recent reports suggest that the financial terms are yet to be finalised. Messi has netted eight goals and provided three assists in nine matches so far this season, and he continues to remain the most important player for Inter Miami.

These insights were shared by Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas with FDP Radio Miami regarding the Argentine’s contract. Mas said, “The stars are aligning for something great, for a beautiful future for the club and for Lionel. It’s solely his decision.” He added, “I expect that within 60–90 days, we’ll have to determine all of this. My hope has always been—and everything we’re doing—is to see Messi play at our new stadium in 2026. Hopefully, that happens.”
In a notable performance, Messi continued to dazzle on the field, contributing significantly. Messi added two goals, including a penalty kick in the 84th minute, to lift Miami past LAFC 3-1 on a previous Wednesday night, sealing a 3-2 aggregate win in that two-leg series.
Messi’s impact at Miami
So far, during his time at Inter Miami, Lionel Messi has reportedly scored 42 goals and provided 21 assists in just 43 appearances. He not only elevated Miami’s level but also played a key role in their journey in various competitions, including helping them secure trophies like the Leagues Cup in 2023.
The 2025 season marks Inter Miami’s final run at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale before a new era kicks off at Miami Freedom Park, potentially led by Messi in the heart of Miami. Messi will next be seen in action against Chicago on Monday.
