New Delhi: For decades the Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo debate has been going around with both fanbases having their say. The duo have dominated football for more than a decade, starting their achievements in 2008, collecting 13 Ballon d’Ors between themselves, with Messi winning eight times while Ronaldo taking home five times. Messi has won the Best FIFA Men’s Player on four occasions while Ronaldo has taken the title thrice.

For many Messi is one of the finest who ever graced the field of football with an impressive trophy cabinet that includes a World Cup. Playing for European clubs Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, the Argentinian took four UEFA Champions League trophies and took home three FIFA Club World Cups. The Portuguese forward has taken five Champions League and four Club World Cups.

Speaking recently to Spanish media outlet El Chiringuito, Ronaldo said that while he respects the opinions of fans of Messi, Pele and Deigo Maradona, he is nevertheless “a complete player”. Having scored 923 career goals the former Real Madrid star felt that numbers are there to support his claims. the 39-year-old noted that he has scored most headers, penalties and free kicks by stats. In fact, Ronaldo pointed out that despite not being left-footed he is amongst the top ten who have scored with left foot.

The claims have left the 37-year-old’s fans in fury who were highly active on social media to point t out Messi’s humility and that claims may have gone a bit too far.

 

 

Messi is second in the list of highest career goals, scoring 850 times, trailing the former Manchester United star by 73 goals. However, the Argentina captain has made fewer appearances as well. In international football, Ronaldo is leading the top goalscorer list with 135 goals from 217 appearances for Portugal, while Messi is second in the list with 112 goals from 191 appearances.

Ronaldo’s season with Al-Nassr has been outstanding this season scoring 15 times in 17 games so far, leading the Golden Boot race. In the Saudi Pro League, Ronaldo’s team are currently third with eight points away from the top. On Monday during, Al Nassr’s clash against Al Wasl, Ronaldo’s brace took his career goal tally to 923.

Messi missed most of the season for Major League Soccer side Inter Miami due to a ligament injury. He ended the season with 20 goals, in the third place joint with his teammate Luis Suarez.

 Cristiano Ronaldo recently pointed out that he was the most complete player based on stats.
