New Delhi: Flamboyant England batter Joe Root smashed his 34th Test century for England in the 2nd Test match against Sri Lanka at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Saturday. The feat arrived on the third day of the match when England continued their second innings and Root yet again showed his class to register a second hundred in the match, having hit the first in the first innings.
He notably overtook England’s great Sir Alastair Cook, who had 33 Test hundred to his credit for England, as the English batter with the most Test hundreds. Root has been anchoring England’s innings in the match, handing them heft leads at the conclusion of both of their innings. Having a score of 143 off 206 balls with the help of 18 fours, England on Root’s back scored 427 in 102 overs.
Sri Lanka responded with a meagre 196 to which England had a reply of 251 on the third day – coming well with the help of Root’s 36th ton as he scored 103 off 121 balls with the help of 10 fours. England got a lead of 482 runs and comfortably put Sri Lanka in a precarious position. The Three Lions have already won the first Test and will clinch the three-match series if they claim this one as well.
Root’s prominence
Root also played a part in England’s first Test victory over Sri Lanka as he contributed with a 42 in the first and a 62* in the second innings. He has been exemplary throughout his Test career and is a part of the elite “Fab 4” not just for one, but for many reasons. It is highly noteworthy that Kohli was spearheading the pack with 27 centuries till the start of 2021. Root was at 17 back then and he went on to slam 17 tons in between to lead the list while Kohli could add two more in the timespan.
He has also entered the list of the top 10 Test batters with the most centuries in Test cricket, removing Sir Alastair Cook from the 10th position. Root has also become the joint-sixth batter to register most Test hundreds, sharing the feat with four other batters. Here is a detailed look at all the top batters with the most Test tons.
