New Delhi: Liverpool FC thumped Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 t be crowned the 2024-25 English Premier League champions. The Reds have reached an unassailable 82 points from 23 matches, 15 more than second-placed Arsenal with four more rounds left.
Liverpool equalled the record of 20 English top-flight title victories with bitter-rivals Manchester United and did it so with four matches remaining, becoming only the seventh team to do so.
They needed only a draw on Sunday but their London-based opponents after initially falling behind.
The visitors went ahead through Dominic Solanke in the 12th minute only for Liverpool to hit back through Luis Diaz only four minutes later.
Then a couple of smart finishes from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo put Liverpool ahead 3-1 as players went into half-time. From then on the hosts were very comfortable as their star striker Mohamed Salah added his name to the scoresheet in the 63rd minute with a superb effort.
Tottenham then added to their own misery as Destiny Udogie put tha bell into his own net to confirm Liverpool’s second Premier League title.
Slot shines
Liverpool manager Arne Slot became the first Dutch manager to win the topmost league in ENgland after succeeding Jurgen Klopp at the beginning of the season.
Slot’s win made him coach of one from eight different nations to have won the English league.
Liverpool have now become fifth team to win multiple EPL titles since the competition was renamed in 1992-93. Manchester United (13), Manchester City (8), Chelsea (5), and Arsenal (3) are the others apart from Liverpool (2019-20 and 2024-25).
The Tottenham win was Liverpool’s 25th win of the cuurent campaign that also saw seven draws and two losses. Slot’s boys have netted 80 goals and conceded only 32 times and have a goal difference of 48.
The star of their campaign has been Salah, who with 28 goals is in pole position to win the Golden Boot award and iwth 18 assists is set for the Playmaker award too.
