New Delhi: Newly-crowned women’s doubles gold medallist in mixed doubles, Huang Yaqiong of China, had a special day at the badminton court as her boyfriend Liu Yuchen proposed her for marriage right after the gold medal ceremony.
Pairing with Zheng Siwei in the mixed doubles final, Huang decimated South Korean duo of Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun in straight games 21-8, 21-11 in a match which lasted for just 41 minutes. Zheng and Huang grabbed the first gold medal of Paris Olympics in badminton. The medal ceremony was subsequently held at the La Chapelle Arena. The Chinese pair came off the podium for the victory lap just when Huang partner was waiting to double the joy around the corner.
Liu Yuchen, who plays in the men’s doubles event of badminton, presented a bunch of flowers to Huang and then removed the ring while getting on one of his knees to complete the proposal. The mixed doubles gold medallist was left nothing but suprised by the gesture and eventually accepted the beautiful-planned proposal.

“I had been preparing for the match. Today I became an Olympic champion and I got engaged. I think the ring fits my finger really well,” the 30-year-old Huang told reporters after the proposal, as reported by news agency AFP.
