New Delhi: Indian tennis prodigy Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi has secured an official ranking under the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) system. The governing body for the professional women tennis players updated its rankings on Monday.
The 15-year-old tennis youngster, who recently made a semifinal appearance at the Mumbai Open WTA 125, has made her debut in the WTA rankings chart. She has achieved a career-best ranking of 646 following the outstanding run at the Cricket Club of India (CCI), where she entered as an unranked player.
At the age of 15 years and 243 days, Maaya became the youngest to enter the WTA singles top 700, as per Indian Tennis Daily. Ankita Raina happens to be India’s top-ranked singles player in the women’s category at 294 followed by Sahaja Yamalapalli (302) and Shrivalli Bhamidapaty (311).
Maaya Rajeshwaran’s Breakthrough Mumbai Open Performance
Maaya received a wildcard entry to participate in the Mumbai Open WTA 125, which is the highest-level tennis tournament for women professionals hosted in India. The Tamil Nadu player made some massive upsets to make the best count of the opportunity. She defeated some of the ranked players in the tournament, having beaten World No.264 Nicole Fossa Huergo of Italy 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in the qualifiers.
She also defeated Jessica Failla of United States in the main draw before rallying past World No.225 Iryna Shymanovich 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the Round of 16. She was leading against Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas after the latter withdrew in the middle of the second set when the Indian teenager was leading 6-3, 3-2.
Maaya also won in a tough quarterfinal match against Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to make it to the semfiinal round. Her dream run was brought to an end by eventual champion Jil Teichmann in straight sets by score line of 6-3, 6-1.
Maaya has been offered a scholarship to train at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain and she will soon be joining there along with her schooling.
