New Delhi: Madison Keys pulled off a major upset as she defeated 7th-ranked Elena Rybakina to storm into the quarter-finals at the Australian Open 2025 on Sunday, January 20. Keys defeated Rybakina 6-3 1-6 6-3 in a humdinger at the Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne to extend her winning streak to nine matches in 2025.
It was a spirited performance from American Keys, who dominated the proceedings in the opening set with some terrific skills and a strong service game. Keys clinched the first set 6-3 before Rybakina staged a comeback to level things up by taking the second set 6-1 with a clinical display. Rybakina won four straight games in the second set, sparking hopes of a comeback in the match.
However, Keys once again got back on track in the third set which proved to be a roller coaster before the American eventually clinched it 6-3 to win the Round of 16 match and enter the quarter-finals of the first Grand Slam of the year. It was Keys’ 9th win on the trot across all competitions in 2025 as she continued her dream run.

Rybakina, who struggled with a lower back injury during the game, was affected by the pain as she looked far from her best in the third set. Having finished runners-up in the Australian Open in 2023, the 2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina was looking to go one step further to clinch her maiden title Down Under this year. However, Keys shattered the Kazakhstani star’s dreams with her victory on Monday.
“Her serve is such a weapon, so I knew that if I could just try to make at least some of her service games a little bit competitive, then I had a chance,” said 19th seed Keys after her victory.
“So I was basically just trying to make anything that I could get my racket on back over the net, which worked sometimes,” she added.
Madison Keys vs Elina Svitolina in quarter-finals
Keys set up a blockbuster clash with Elina Svitolina in the women’s singles quarter-finals after beating Rybakina in Melbourne on Monday. Svitolina defeated Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets in her 4th-round clash on Monday to enter the quarter-finals. Both Keys and Svitolina have played some phenomenal tennis in the tournament so far and their quarters meeting promises to be a cracking affair.
