New Delhi: Maharashtra batter Ankit Bawne has been handed a one-match ban by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for showing dissent against the on-field umpire during the Ranji Trophy Round 5 match last year.
As a result, he is missing the ongoing Round 6 fixture against Baroda which is underway in Nashik. The incident occurred at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) stadium in Pune when Bawne edged a delivery and the ball went to the second slip. The Services team appealed for the catch and the on-field umpire gave him out. However, conclusive evidence that the ball had bounced before Shubman Rohilla completed the catch.
The Maharashtra batter refused to leave the ground for about 15 minutes as the on-field decision could not be challenged due to the unavailability of the DRS. The game resumed after match referee Amit Sharma and the Maharashtra coach intervened.
After the incident, pacer Kulkarni lashed out at the umpiring standards in domestic cricket and said that players are subject to fines and reprimand but what about proper assessment of the umpires?
“Why do the same erring umpires continue to officiate and play spoilsport? When there are blunders of this nature, the anger is justified” he added.
Regular Maharashtra skipper who was involved in the unofficial Test series against Australia during that time also posted the images of the dismissal on his social media account and wrote: “How can this be given out in a live game??? Shame to even appeal this for a catch”.
Maharashtra Cricket Association issues official statement
