New Delhi: In a huge boost for Team India, senior India pacer Mohammed Shami looks set to make his much-anticipated comeback as he has resumed bowling in the nets after a long injury layoff. Shami missed the Australia series at home earlier this year followed by IPL 2024 and the T20 World Cup 2024 after undergoing Achilles tendon surgery.
Shami later revealed he bowled with an injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup for India last year which aggravated it and led to surgery. The fast bowler was one of the heroes of India’s phenomenal campaign in the ODI World Cup where he picked up 24 wickets in just 7 matches to finish as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament.
Shami finally looks ready to make his comeback soon as he took to Instagram on Tuesday to share a video of himself bowling in the nets. The fast bowler looked cautious with his run-up as he warmed up at home. He has fully recovered from his injury but it will take him some time to start bowling full throttle as he eyes a return soon.
Watch Mohammed Shami resumes bowling in the nets:
Shami was India’s best bowler by a distance in the 2023 ODI World Cup but he has since not played for the national team due to his injury issues. In his absence, India handed out debuts to a couple of new faces in Tests, however, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh ensured the senior pacer was not missed much in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Bumrah and Arshdeep picked up an impressive 32 wickets between them in the tournament, helping India go all the way to lift the elusive trophy after beating South Africa in the final. Hardik Pandya too impressed with the ball in the tournament and played a key role in India’s triumph in Shami’s absence from the pace attack.
Will Mohammed Shami return in Sri Lanka series?
India are set to travel to Sri Lanka for a white-ball tour later this month consisting of three T20Is and as many ODIs. Shami is unlikely to make the cut in any of the squads as he is yet to find his bowling rhythm and get a nod from the medical staff at the NCA. The squads for the Sri Lanka tour are likely to be announced by BCCI on Wednesday, July 17.
