Manchester City have reached an agreement with AC Milan for Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders for a fee of 55 million euros (£46.3 m).  The 26-year-old is set to sign a five-year deal at City after agreeing personal terms with the Manchester club.

The deal includes additional payments if certain clauses are met and is subject to a medical. City are aiming to complete a deal for the Dutch midfielder before the Club World Cup, which kicks off on 14 June.

Mateo Kovacic’s Achilles surgery, which has ruled him out of the 32-team tournament in the United States, forced City into action to sign the midfielder. With Kevin de Bruyne also set to miss the tournament amid transfer links with Serie A champions Napoli, Reijnders’ arrival will strengthen the midfield.

In Reijnders, City find the right fit

Reijnders, who has 22 caps for the Netherlands, is an ideal fit in a position at City that requires urgent attention.

The Dutchman scored 15 goals in 54 matches across all competitions for Milan last season and was named Serie A’s midfielder of the season. His performances were not enough to save Milan’s disastrous campaign as the Rossoneri finished eighth and missed out on European qualification.

The 26-year-old enjoyed the best goalscoring season of his career, hitting double digits for the first time.

Reijnders, who made his senior debut for PEC Zwolle seven years ago in 2018, has developed into a solid midfielder.

He offers versatility to City and is capable of playing high in midfield or as an enforcer. His ability to receive the ball in tight areas, beating the press, has attracted the interest of City coach Pep Guardiola.

The expected return of Rodri towards the end of last season could see the Spaniard playing alongside Reijnders or behind him.
