Managerial Mavericks: Top managers that are available for clubs in need of change

New Delhi: In the world of football, the players are often seen as the end all be all at any club and while they are extremely important to a club, the person responsible for managing those players is a more vital cog in this machine. Any football club can only be as good as its manager and without the right one at the helm, even the best players will struggle to consistently deliver the desired results. The current version Manchester United highlights this point considering they’re sitting 14th in the Premier League table currently.

For nearly two decades, the Red Devils of Manchester were amongst the best and the most feared teams across Europe, which isn’t the case right now. The only difference being Sir Alex Ferguson. Till the time the Scot was in charge of the club, things were fine and it’s been over 10 years since he retired but the club is still struggling. Manchester United aren’t the only club struggling currently, with a lot of other teams running out of patience with their manager, here’s a look at the top managers that are currently without a club and are available to join.

5) Edin Terzić

The German was most recently seen managing his childhood club Borussia Dortmund and guided them to the UEFA Champions League final in his final season at the club. Terzić has had two separate spells with the German side and has had a good time at the club across both his spells. In over 150 Bundesliga games as manager, he had a win percentage of 66.03% which is even more commendable when you realize that he’s only been a manager for a total of three years.

Terzić guided the club to the 2020/21 DfB Pokal title, the club’s first major trophy since the 2016/17 season. Motivated by the love for his club, he almost guided them to a first Bundesliga title since the 2011/12 season but missed out the 2022/23 title on the final day of the season on goal difference. He’s been without a club since walking away from the Dortmund role before the start of the season and could be a good fit for any club competing for Europe.

4) Graham Potter

Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter has been available ever since he was fired from the role of Chelsea head coach. The Englishman gained prominence after his work in Sweden with Östersunds FK. After spending seven years in Sweden and guiding the club to their first and only European tournament, where he managed a victory over Arsenal at the Emirates, he returned to England.

Impressive spells at Swansea City and Brighton and Hove Albion, the latter of which got him widespread claim, Potter became one of the most sought after young managers in the world. He left Brighton to join Chelsea and despite his tenure ending soon enough, he took the club to the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League. Since being sacked from Chelsea, Potter has been linked with a lot of jobs but he is seemingly waiting for the England managerial call.

3) Maurizio Sarri

Another former Chelsea manager, Maurizio Sarri has been left without a club since he departed Lazio back in March of this year. Sarri is a brilliant tactician, known for playing attractive and attacking football which involves retaining possession a lot of quick and short passes. His brand of football was dubbed as the ‘Sarri-ball’ in the media and his style drew comparisons to Pep Guardiola’s style of play. His spell at Napoli earned him the praise he deserved and won him the 2016-17 Serie A manager of the season award.

His time at Napoli helped draw attention from Chelsea and he managed the London club for a single season, winning his first major trophy of his career, the UEFA Europa League. Despite winning a European honour, the manager was sacked from the club and he returned to Italy, signing for Juventus. Once again, he won a trophy and was sacked the same season as he won the Serie A title and lost the job to club legend Andrea Pirlo. Sarri has been linked to the Everton job while reports also state that Milan are monitoring the manager. Whichever club he chooses to join, they stand to benefit a lot from the Italian.

2) Thomas Tuchel

The last of three former Chelsea managers on this list, Thomas Tuchel is another top class manager who is currently available since he departed Bayern Munich at the end of last season. His time at Bayern was a highly confusing one because the club sacked then-manager Julien Nagelsmann out of the blue in favour of Tuchel. Tuchel has a rich CV where he has managed a lot of high profile clubs, winning trophies with all of them. The German succeeded his fellow German Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.

While his tenure with the club wasn’t as successful as Klopp’s, he gained prominence at the club for his style and he won them the DfB Pokal in the 2016/17 season, their first trophy since the 2011/12 season. He would then manage the likes of PSG and Chelsea, guiding them both to UEFA Champions League finals in back-to-back seasons, winning the trophy with the London club. His time at Chelsea showed that he is extremely capable of being a top-class manager and at the time of writing, he’s being heavily linked with the Manchester United role.

1) Zinedine Zidane

Talking about managers linked with Manchester United, Zinedine Zidane’s name is one that comes up every time there is a vacancy at Old Trafford. The former Real Madrid superstar hasn’t managed a single club since he left Los Blancos at the end of the 2020/21 season. The Frenchman is one of the few greats who was a brilliant player in his playing days and turned out to a brilliant manager after his retirement. The only drawback is that he’s only ever managed one club. Despite managing just one club, his record is such that three years on from the last game he managed, he is still in the mix for any top managerial opening in the world.

Zidane famously led the club to a historic ‘three-peat’ of the UEFA Champions league, winning the tournament in three successive years between 2016 and 2018. In addition to those UCL titles, he’s even two FIFA Club World Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and two La Liga titles. It’s been a well known fact that the French superstar is patiently waiting for the French National Team role once Didier Deschamps leaves. While Zizou has previously said that he’d love to manage Juventus, another one of his former side, it seems clear that he wants the France job first.

With a lot of other teams running out of patience with their manager, here’s a look at the top managers that are currently without a club and are available to join.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
