New Delhi: Manchester City appointed Bernardo Silva as their new captain. His contract at the club will end in 2026, and the Portuguese has hinted that he may not extend his contract. He joined Manchester City from AS Monaco in 2017 and has been linked with a move back to his boyhood club Benfica.

Pep Guardiola usually allows his players and staff to choose the new captain, but he decided to step in and named Silva as the captain of the club after a trophyless campaign in the 2024-25 season. The Manchester City manager also named Rodri, Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland as the vice-captains of the team, ahead of their opening Club World Cup match against Wydad AC at the Lincoln Financial Field stadium in Philadelphia.

He has made 266 appearances for Manchester City in the Premier League, scoring 43 goals and providing 46 assists. The 30-year-old has won six league titles and also won the treble in the 2022-23 season. Guardiola’s team became only the second English side ever to achieve the feat after rivals Manchester United.

‘I’m very focused on my season’: Bernardo Silva

Silva was asked about his future and the player said that he knows what he’s going to do but it’s not the time to talk about that. The midfielder further added that he’s very focused on the season and performing well for the club.

“I have one year on my contract so obviously I can leave next season. This season will for sure be with Man City. I’m going to stay. I’ve had options in the past and this year, like last year and this year, my option is to stay at Man City,” Silva said.
